James Creek
Constable Trudy Winters punched her timecard then dropped it into her empty slot. Another day done, thank god. She looked hopefully over at John Masonâs card and her face fell; he was still clocked in. Still in Kamloops or back in town with that bloody ghost-woman. Probably with her right now, the goddamn bitch.
Heaving a heavy sigh, Trudy moved her way through the hall to the locker room where she opened her personal storage compartment. She stood for a long moment, staring blindly inside, her thoughts consumed with the sexy sergeant. What was he doing? She wondered. Sitting in his truck, peering at the woman through binoculars? Watching her every move? She didnât doubt it, the woman was pretty. Very pretty. And John hadnât seemed to mind his round-the-clock surveillance assignment as much as he should have.
The cell phone clipped to her belt buckle jangled bringing her back from her trance. She glanced down but didnât answer it. It was Lolaâs number on the caller ID, probably calling from the bar to find out what was taking her so long. âIâm coming,â Trudy muttered, retrieving her purse and windbreaker then slamming the locker door just a little too hard. She grimaced as the loud noise clattered down the row of steel cabinets. She walked to the washroom, used the toilet then stood in front of the sink and eyed her reflection glumly, her gaze flitting over her boyishly cropped, blond hair, her droopy left eye, thin lips, crooked nose and finally, the long silver scar that ripped through her cheek and chin.
Did it matter? The ghost-woman? Probably not, Trudy thought. John had pretty much come out and told her that he wasnât interested in her long before the pretty red-head had come to town.
After his divorce, Trudy, who had lusted after the sergeant from her very first day with the James Creek detachment, had made her move. Sheâd showered him with gifts and practically thrown herself at him. Heâd been firm but kind and had insisted that he respected her and cared about her as a friend and co-worker, but had made it clear that there would never be anything more between them. While sheâd accepted each rejection gracefully, it hadnât made her desire for him diminish in the least.
The cell phone rang again and this time, Trudy picked it up and flipped it open.
âWhere are ya, babe? Trucker-fuckers TransPacific Tom and Maintown Gary are here and theyâre hornier than all hell.â
âIâm on my way,â she said, then snapped the phone shut and dropped it into her purse.
Outside, Trudy drew a deep breath and crossed the parking lot, scanning the vehicles for Johnâs blue pick-up truck. There was no sign of it and she sighed yet again. Well, thereâs always Maintown Gary, she thought cynically. Sure, heâs only about fifty, bald and four hundred pounds. Donât knock him, she told herself, at least heâs willing to screw you every once in a while which is more than most of the men you know.
